Oni no Kyouran
Part 2

Ayumu grumbles, and wipes the sweat from his brow as he looks around the village square; Misaki was right, Kyouran is a very simple looking village-the buildings are simply built and spaced apart widely. The roads are made of dirt, and all the signs are hand-painted. It feels like he's gone back in time, having just recently that morning come from Tokyo…he half-heartedly attempts a smile to all the people who have gathered in the square to stare at him.

"Village like this, I'm not surprised they don't get many visitors," he comments to himself, "took us several hours to get here with expert directions-can't imagine anyone could accidentally stumble across this village."  A thought occurs to Ayumu and he frowns. "So Kuroshima-san had to deliberately come here of his own volition….it really probably isn't anything to worry about."

"Good day, sir, how are you finding our village?" In his distraction, a tall man with dark blond hair approached Ayumu, and politely bows to him. Ayumu jumps just barely, startling the man, and he can't imagine what's made him so jumpy. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you, sir. I am Kirishite Hanpei, a chairperson of Kyouran village."

"Oh, no…I think the trip here wore on my nerves, that's all…I am Detective Yumeshiro Ayumu," Ayumu pulls his badge from his coat pocket and shows it to Hanpei; the man frowns, and for the briefest moment, Ayumu could swear his eyes flash gold-but then it's gone and Hanpei's eyes are brown once more. "I'm here investigating a missing person-he was last reported as being in Kyouran village."

"A missing person? How terrible," Hanpei remarks, "I will help you in any way I can. Kyouran is a tight knit community; I'm certain if you ask anyone, they would be more than happy to assist you in your investigations, myself included." He smiles, but it looks strained somewhat, "so, Tantei-san…is there anything you wish to know that you believe would aid your investigation?"

"Well, for starters..." Ayumu pulls a small photo from his coat, "this is the man we're looking for." He hands the photo to Hanpei, "it's a little old, but he hasn't changed that much since; men in their fifties rarely do."

"I see...." Hanpei peers at the photo, "what a steely man...what does he do?"

"I'm not at liberty to disclose that, Kirishite-san. His name is Kuroshima Nagumo, and he was supposed to have been in Kyouran village as of a week ago-you're a chairperson for the village, maybe you've seen him?"

"Mmm..." Hanpei taps the photo, "yes, I did...he was a fretfully nervous man. He came into town about a couple weeks ago, and asked a lot of questions. He was a detective, right? He had that sort of a habit-" he hands the photo back, "but he got a lot more nervous the longer he stayed here; I suppose some city people can't wind down enough to enjoy themselves."

"But do you know what happened to him? Is he still in town?"

"Can't say I do, Tantei-san...must have been a week ago, he disappeared. He was there the day before, but come the morning he was gone...I had just assumed he'd left." Hanpei shrugs.

"In the middle of the night."

"City people are more accustomed to night life than we are, aren't you?" Somehow, Ayumu has a strange feeling about the story-it seems kooky. The explanation makes sense, logically, but something still feels wrong about it. "I'm sorry I can't help you more, sir...if there's anything else I can do to help, please name it."

"Do you know how Kuroshima-san got to Kyouran village in the first place?" He wonders, glancing about, "are there shuttles or did he hitchhike or what?"

"Oh, he came in his own car," Hanpei supplies with a smile, "but the trip out here caused the engine to overheat, so we handed it over to Jinpachi-kun to repair...you may have noticed, but we're a small village, and no one here really has cars. But Jinpachi moved here from the city a few years ago and dug himself a niche repairing things for us...he's a real blessing, you know."

Ayumu waves it off impatiently, "that's great...is Kuroshima-san's car still here? Do you know?"

Hanpei frowns, screwing up his face in thought, "I'm not sure...it might be, it might not be. Assuming he left on his own last week, it shouldn't be here, I guess...but you'll have to ask Jinpachi-kun. He lives in the shop down on the eastern street nearest to the large shrine." A shrine....? "In the meanwhile, though, is there anything else I can help you with?"

Ayumu frowns, "A shrine? What sort of shrine?" He feels dumb for asking, and the detail seems irrelevant, but the idea of a shrine sends shivers up his spine for some reason.

"Ookami-sama's shrine. He's Kyouran's local deity-we have shrines to him all over Kyouran. He's going to return to lead us once more, according to legend, so we can't look like we've been slacking off in his absence." Like the lack of modern technology isn't slacking off? But Ayumu disregards it all the same. "Do you believe in gods like Ookami-sama, tantei-san?"

For some reason, the name puts every hair on his body on end, and a growl attempts to form in his throat. The name is like poisoned razor blades to his ears and he can't imagine why. "....It's not my place to answer that, Kirishite-san." And his answer may not be pleasant either. He turns to leave, but pauses. "By the way...there was a young man waiting at the front gate when I arrived, do you know anything about that?"

"Mm...must have been Ryuuichi-kun," Hanpei said after a moment of deliberation, "he likes to watch for Ookami-sama's arrival. Although lately, he's been a bit off....talking about Ookami-sama's imminent arrival. But I'm sure he's just excited about the upcoming festival. He has a big part, after all." The pale-haired man sure did love to talk. "All the same, it should be nothing. He was just curious, I'm sure...take care, Detective."

For having so much dialogue, Ayumu felt strangely ignorant-as though he's learned nothing. As though he might have even taken a step backwards the moment he entered the village. There's something wrong with Kyouran village, and it doesn't end with discovering what happened to Chief Kuroshima.

-End Part 2-
Part 2 is up and you get your first chance to basically go through some dialogue options. It's your first dialogue box that you have control over, so odds are good you can go through all of these-though probably not get the answers you'd like...later, when the situation's more desperate, though, you probably won't get the option of choosing every bit of dialogue, though. So enjoy it while it lasts.

This exact chapter will be updated with your choice as you go through it, and then when I believe you've reached a good area, I'll move on to the next chapter. So be prepared to comment here multiple times. Keep an eye on it, alright?

6/8/12-First update is up! Feel free to pick another answer. This is a run-through, mostly to get you guys used to using the dialogue options and for me to get used to answering them. So have fun! An important clue has already emerged in this new piece of dialogue.

6/9/12-Two updates in a day, awesome! I'll keep updating the story as often as people are willing to contribute, though, I promise. After this conversation, though, I'm going to start up the next chapter-but feel free to go through as many dialogue options as you want before ending this conversation.

9/18/12-No decisions on what comes next led me to finally decide to finish this chapter myself. I'll start up the next chapter soon.

I love the feeling of playing a game that I get from reading this story. Since I apparently have nothing better to do with my life than to frequently visit deviantart, it seems I'm first again.

Well then, next question, option d ask about transportation. It's logical right? Did he come by car or bus or what?
